What are chemical reactions?

You must be wondering: what in the world are chemical reactions? Chemical reactions are the change in the arrangement of the atoms or molecules of two or more substances that come into contact with each other. 

 

If you found the definition a bit too much, here is a more understandable definition: 

a chemical reaction is the process in which one or more substances are changed into one or more different substances. These atoms or molecules hit and collide with each other, leading to one or more new substances being created. Quite similar to addition, isn't it?

Furthermore, chemical reactions could also happen when a substance breaks down into two new substances - basically, what is happening is that the group of atoms are broken down into smaller group of atoms

Chemical reactions could be found in daily life! For example: have you ever seen iron turn orange-brown over time? It's called rusting, and rusting is also a chemical reaction. We create new products when iron reacts with the oxygen in the air - how fascinating!

What should you look out for in a chemical reaction?

Now, since we know what is a chemical reaction - how can we tell if a chemical reaction is happening? 

 

Here are 5 main things that you could observe in a chemical reaction:

  1. Bubbles, or if you want to use a fancier word: effervescence).

  2. A change in color

  3. smell, or an odor being given off.

  4. A change in temperature: the reaction could become hotter and this means that there is an increase in temperature, a reaction like this is called exothermic; or the reaction could become colder and the temperature decreases which means that it is an endothermic reaction.

  5. A change in the transparency of the substance, also known as opacity; when a substance becomes less transparent, it becomes opaque. Whenever a substance becomes opaque, it may be due to the formation of a solid from two liquids - this solid product we end up with is called a precipitate.
